About this property
Private Cabin on the Conejos River, Pet Friendly, Sleeps 5
Unwind and enjoy your vacation the way it was meant to be. For over 150 years the Conejos River has been the fisherman’s choice in Southern Colorado. Nestled in the South San Juan Wilderness of the Rio Grande National Forest, the Homestead Cabin on the Conejos offers your family a great vacation experience.
The Homestead Cabin is one of the original guest cabins on the 14 acre Conejos Ranch located along the Conejos River with approximately 1 mile of private river frontage. The rustic 2 bedroom, 1 bath cabin has a full size, well-appointed kitchen and a cozy wood stove. Under new ownership since 2016, the cabin has received new flooring, furniture, and many other upgrades for your comfort. The master bedroom has a luxurious pillow top queen bed and the second bedroom has a pillow top full size bed and twin size bunk beds. The cabin will sleep 5 comfortably.
The kitchen is fully stocked with Caphalon cookware, blender, coffee maker, electric tea kettle, a full spice cabinet, and plenty of extras.
NOTE: as of 05/21/2020, the fiber optic internet service is active!
Outside under the pines, is a gas grill, picnic table and a fire pit to enjoy cool evenings. Wood is provided however you must heed any burn ban or red flag warnings. You will receive current fire restrictions, if any, prior to arrival.
Fish the river right outside your cabin across the private park or in over 30 smaller streams and tributaries in the county that offer some remarkable fishing for Rainbow and Native Brown Trout. The season generally runs from May through October – with July, August and September being prime months for dry-fly. Licenses are requires and may be obtained at the Fox Creek Store or Conejos River Anglers.
If hunting is your preference, the Homestead Cabin on the Conejos makes a great base camp. While hunting is not allowed on the property, hunt for deer, elk, bear, and antelope all within a short 30 minute drive.
Artists and photographers, mountain bikers, hikers and backpackers can find over 180 miles of trails in the wild and rugged San Juan Mountains of Colorado that stretch from southwestern Colorado into northern New Mexico. Here the San Juan Mountains remain yet untouched by man and where the wanderer can find solitude from the crowded avenues of the city. The best backpacking in the state is here, some would argue. In the autumn, the area is popular with hunting parties looking for trophy elk. But outside of the autumn hunting season, solitude can be more readily found here for the soul who is willing to seek it out.
If trains are your passion, the historic narrow gauge Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad is just down the road in Antonito, Colorado. Take the train from Antonito to Chama for an unforgettable experience. Or head north to Alamosa and catch a ride on the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad. The Rio Grande Scenic Railroad is the highest and longest route on standard gauge rail. Choose from a daytime ride over historic La Veta Pass with steep grades, wildlife sightings and narrated tales of railroad and mining history, a weekend train ride to a mountaintop concert, or a sunset dinner train to make your vacation truly unforgettable.
Shoppers will delight in Taos, NM a short 1 1/2 hour drive away. In the summer, rafting is also available in Taos. Don’t forget to stop at the Chili Line Depot in Tres Piedras, NM on the way for one of the best burgers around and great home-made desserts.
The Homestead Cabin on the Conejos is pet friendly. We only ask that you let your four legged family members join you on your adventures. Pets should always be on leash while outdoors and should never be left in the cabin un-attended.
The cabin is non-smoking however you are welcome to smoke outside. Please dispose of smoking materials properly and always be careful of any fire sources while visiting in the National Forest.
About the Area The South San Juan area is special for its rugged scenery, large expanses of forest, and high altitude trails that offer a sense of remoteness difficult to find elsewhere. High ridges, pinnacles and deep canyons, carved by the headwaters of the San Juan, Conejos, and Blancos rivers characterize the geography of the wilderness. Pristine spruce, fir and ponderosa forest make the South San Juan wilderness a sanctuary for deer, elk, bear, and other wildlife that thrives unmolested by human activity. It comes as no surprise then that it was in this place that the last Colorado grizzly was shot in 1979. Biologists speculate that if any Colorado grizzlies remain, it would be in this remote wilderness.
Nearby Attractions: Guided fishing at Conejos River Anglers (you won't be disappointed) and guided horseback rides and overnights with Conejos Canyon Outfitters are currently available.

This was a wonderful little cabin to share memories of the forest, the river, and hikes to the meadow. The cabin was perfect for the gathering. It is well located, well kept and great place to stay.
We had a wonderful stay at the cabin! Walked across to the river several times a day, so relaxing. The cabin had everything we needed to cook and serve our meals. Hope to come back and stay again in the future!
This is a great cabin in the Canejos Canyon, with the river right out the front door. Super trout fishing and great hiking in the South San Juan Wilderness. The cabin is very relaxing with just a couple neighbors, nice and secluded.
Fantastic little cabin near the river! Cozy, comfortable and clear. Wee stocked kitchen. Very quiet during our stay. Only other people we saw were unloadind thier car as we were leaving. We hope to visit again soon.
The Homestead cabin was perfect. It was very clean and fully supplied with everyone one would need. The Conjeos River was just yards away and beautiful. The area was quiet and neighbors were friendly. The host was very responsive with our needs making our stay fantastic. I will definitely book this again in the future!
The cabin was wonderful! Stocked/equipped with most anything you need. Very clean. The beds were amazingly comfortable. In fact I’m on the hunt for the same comforter on one of the beds! Only con was there were a lot of mosquitoes. Hard to enjoy the river. However lots of places to drive to if you’re looking for a body of water.
Homestead Cabin is so comfortable and beautifully decorated. The kitchen is so well stocked that if you forget something, it is there. We feel so at home there. Of course the location is so beautiful, especially in the fall. For us, it was a tremendous time that went by to quickly.
This is a wonderful, cozy river cabin! We loved staying here with our dogs. The location was great and our host was super responsive in our communications. She had the cabin well equipped with pretty much anything you would need for cooking. She also had lots of Off! for the mosquitos as well as citronella candles, which was a nice touch.
The Homestead Cabin is a warm, comfortable cabin. It is definitely homey. It had everything we needed, plus, in the kitchen area. The location on the Conejos River is beautiful and relaxing. Someone really put a great deal of thought into the decor. We enjoyed being off the grid for a few days and were sad to leave. We would like to make this a yearly get away.
Overall, nice place to stay and we enjoyed our visit. Close proximity to the river and was nice to sit by and play in the river. Secluded location that was nice was quiet and peaceful. Kitchen was well stocked with spices and supplies. We enjoyed the clean and good quality gas grilll. We were attacked by the relentless mosquitoes and thankfully the cabin was well stocked with mosquito repellent. I wish there was a bug zapper or screened porch to keep them at bay to enjoy the porch and cool Colorado evenings.Host was easy to contact and very friendly.
Great cabin ! Kitchen has very thing you need!
Beautiful birds at the feeder! Short walk to the river! We used the local fly shop for a guide one day ! Caught a 18” brown ! Two local restaurants
Have delicious food! Cottonwood and aspen Leaves were staring to change color! Beautiful!
Great little cabin near the river. The main objective of our trip was to be near moving water, so evenings spent by the river listening to the sound of the little rapid were extremely pleasant. We also cook everything due to a special diet, and this kitchen was so well stocked that it was nearly like being at home. That is not so for most cabins where we have stayed in the past where we have had to make do with what we found. During our 5 day stay the area was quiet, despite it being over a weekend. Canon was very clean and tidy. Host was also accommodating to special requests. Thank you for an enjoyable stay!
We booked the cabin to get our dogs away from the fireworks over the 4th of July in Denver. The cabin is a ways from a town/market, so it was especially nice to find little things like citronella candles and a kitchen with sharp knives and plenty of tools/bowls/pans. A step above other quaint mountain stays we have experienced. The bedrooms are good sized, comfortable, clean and fresh.
The cabin owner does not own the land that is riverfront. The riverfront owner has a stagnant fishing pond that makes for lots of mosquitos, but the Conejos is clear and beautiful. We sat by/played in the river several days that week, plus lots of bird watching and deer at twilight. I hope the cabin continues to have river access as the riverfront property is being renovated.
My wife and I stayed at the Homestead cabin for about 5 days in early October. The cabin was wonderfully inviting and was very comfortable for us. Even though the weather got chilly in the evenings, the furnace worked well to keep us warm. The kitchen was well equipped with everything we needed for our stay as well. The Wifi worked well and we were able to stay in-touch with our loved ones even though there was no cellphone service in the area.
The cabin is within walking distance of the Conejos River so it was so relaxing to take a walk when we wanted to.
We took daily drives and hikes in the nearby areas and got to see the spectacular colors of a Colorado autumn!! Even the pictures that we took could not do the fall colors justice!!
We would consider coming back as we thoroughly enjoyed our visit!!
It was disappointing to see the Conejos Ranch facility in disrepair as I have stayed there many times in the past with very fond memories. However the renovated Homestead cabin was very nice, clean, and well stocked. We lacked nothing. I stayed there with 2 of my best, life long friends to fish the Conejos River and surrounding streams. We cooked dinner every night in the well equipped kitchen and enjoyed sitting around a fire afterward every evening. Unfortunately the grasses on the surrounding property had not been mowed and the mosquitoes were in great supply for most of the day and evening. Except for the mosquitoes, we had an excellent time and I will be back in the near future to stay in the Homestead cabin with my son.
We loved the Homestead Cabin! Check-in was super easy and the kitchen was well equipped with great cookware. Easy access to the Conejos for fly fishing and a playground for our granddaughter!
Beautiful, rustic cabin. Well stocked with all necessities for the stay So comfortable and pleasant. Love the Conejos River Valley. A quiet, peaceful time.
What a wonderful getaway. This cabin was just perfect. Comfy beds, beautiful surroundings and a very well stocked kitchen. Great fishing on the Conejos river and great walks in beautiful fall foliage. This is truly a little piece of heaven.I can't recommend this enough.
This little cabin is located in a gem of an area along the Conejos River outside of Antonito. The private setting and thoughtful provisions made for a wonderful fishing getaway!! The owners have made sure to think of every detail and even provide firewood and folding chairs to take to the river. A special spot for sure.
