Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Alqueva?
The best area to stay in Alqueva is around the Alqueva Lake itself, particularly in the vicinity of Monsaraz or Amieira, where you'll find the most convenient and high-quality accommodation options.

Monsaraz, perched atop a hill overlooking the lake, is an excellent choice for couples seeking a tranquil and picturesque setting. This medieval village offers breathtaking views of the Alqueva reservoir and the surrounding Alentejo landscape. Its narrow, cobbled streets, historic castle, and charming local eateries create a romantic and memorable experience. You can enjoy wine tasting from local vineyards or simply relax and take in the stunning scenery.

For those looking for direct access to the lake and water-based activities, staying near Amieira Marina is ideal. This area provides easy access to boat rentals, kayaking, and paddleboarding, allowing you to fully experience the vastness of the Alqueva Lake.
When is the best time to go to Alqueva?
The best time to go to Alqueva is during the spring (April to June) or autumn (September to October) when the weather is pleasant for outdoor activities and stargazing.

Spring brings mild temperatures, typically ranging from 15Ā°C to 25Ā°C, making it ideal for exploring the Alqueva Lake by boat, kayaking, or paddleboarding. The surrounding Alentejo landscape is lush and green during this period, superb for hiking or cycling along the lake's banks. Families will appreciate the comfortable climate for day trips to the nearby medieval town of Monsaraz, with its castle offering panoramic views of the lake.

Autumn also offers agreeable weather, with temperatures similar to spring, usually between 18Ā°C and 28Ā°C. This season is particularly good for stargazing as the nights become longer and clearer. Alqueva is a designated Dark Sky Reserve, and the autumn months provide excellent conditions for observing the night sky, often with organised stargazing events. Couples looking for a quiet, romantic retreat will find the evenings superb for enjoying the dark skies, perhaps from a lakeside hotel terrace.

While summer (July and August) can be very hot, often exceeding 35Ā°C, it's a popular time for water sports on the lake.
