  • Joseph Winthrop Holley, born in 1874 to former slaves in Winnsboro, South Carolina, founded the institution in 1903 as the Albany Bible and Manual Training Institute. W. E. B. Du Bois inspired Holley to return to the South after he read Du Bois's writings on the plight of Albany's blacks in The Souls of Black Folk. Holley relocated to Albany to start a school. With the help of a $2,600 gift from the Hazard family, Holley organized a board of trustees and purchased 50 acres (200,000 m2) of land for the campus, all within a year. The aim of the institution at the time was to provide elementary education and teacher training for the local Black population. It was turned over to the state of Georgia in 1917 as Georgia Normal and Agricultural College, a two-year agricultural and teacher-training institution. In 1932, the school became part of the University System of Georgia and in 1943 it was granted four-year status and renamed Albany State College. The transition to four-year status heavily increased the school's enrollment. In 1981 the college offered its first graduate program, a prelude to the school being upgraded to university status in 1996.

Excellent staff with a warm welcome from Lennis and Kayla, and we had a clean and comfy room! We missed breakfast due to a car issue but the front desk clerk was helpful with directions and helpful beyond the call of duty.

#brunReview the property was completely renovated from my last stay in April 2025. The rooms were excellent revamped with new beds, fixtures, lights, furniture, carpet, wallpaper, and the bathrooms were redone. However, the issue was waiting over 25 minutes for the front desk to help me while she was on the phone during time. Personally I would have put the phone on hold to assist the person in front me which would have taken less than minute due to me having a reservation. Lastly I reserved my room through Expedia and paid and she charged me for the room again which was suppose to be only a security deposit for incidentals. Overall, clean hotel, the staff as a whole is awesome besides those mentioned hiccups. I would recommend staying there. #brunReview

Our stay was one night so I didn't get to use or even see the swimming pool. With that said, The room and all we saw was clean and nice. The bed was comfortable, and we even got a noon checkout time. There was a slight problem where the bathroom sink was a little slow. We came across a manager in the hallway on our way to check out and told her. She immediately picked up her walkie talkie and put a hold on our room to have it looked at. Breakfast, while not homemade, was good. Eggs, sausage, waffles, muffins, cereals, oatmeal, milk, juices, and coffee.

Wonderful Stay

I refuse to stay at hotels where druggies stay so I tend to spend a little more and almost always happier and less annoyed. Hampton Inn was wonderful. From the check in via the lady that had braces (we had a funny conversation about them) to the lady monitoring the food this morning. Staff was great!! The room was very nice and I loved the pillows but the bed was a little slouchy. It was nice having the couch as well as the office chair and an additional fancy chair. Room and bathroom was very spacious, only complaint is that we had a view of the concrete slab on the second floor. No big deal but wow. The hotel seemed like it was full and I did make the reservation last minute. Breakfast was just what was needed to get our day going. We had our dog with us and there was a decoration on the table near the elevator that looked similar to a ball, in a dog’s eyes. I had to pull her back from it. Lol. All in all great stay and would definitely book again.

Hotel staff was always pleasant. Our king size bed was super comfortable. Room was clean and had all we needed…except body soap dispenser in shower was empty. The shower was amazing! The hotel decor needs a serious update. Normally I wouldn’t comment on decor because I know everyone’s taste is different, but this decor truly hurt my eyeballs. My main complaint is the breakfast. Not good at all. The food seemed old and was nearly cold. Eggs were not kept replenished…so I can’t comment on those. Grits pot was empty on day one…and the oatmeal on day two was not cooked all the way. They even ran out of forks on our first morning, and when I asked for some, I was told they had NONE. Hubby ate his waffles with a spoon. I mean, it’s a “free” breakfast, but they really could do better.

Room was clean and bed was comfortable. However other issues tainted our stay. Elevator buttons on our floor did not work. Had to call guest services to send us an elevator before we could descend. Often had to wait. Also, asked for bath linens for second day and was told by receptionist that they would be brought the next morning. None arrived. We called front desk and waited over 45 minutes to get fresh bath linens. We were almost late arriving at the wedding we had come into the area to attend. Our room phone did not work. So frustrating and unsafe.
