Albany is located in the southwestern part of the state of Georgia. The city has a rich past, playing a critical role in the civil rights movement. Come here to enjoy nature. Explore scenic trails or spend the day at a lake fishing and waterskiing.

During 1961 and 1962 in southwest Georgia the struggle of African Americans to claim civil and human rights reached a critical point. The people of Albany adopted a firm position during these delicate times, determined to fight segregation through non-violence. Visit the Albany Civil Rights Movement Memorial, a fountain commemorating this important period in history.

In historic downtown Albany, find the Thronateeska Heritage Centre, a non-profit organization for science education and historic preservation. Enjoy its different sites: the History Museum, Wetherbee Planetarium and the Science Museum. Visit the renowned Theatre AlbanyOpens in a new window, located in John A. Davis House, one of Albany's pre-Civil War landmark buildings. This is among the oldest and most highly regarded cultural organizations in Albany.

While you are in Albany, enjoy its nature-related attractions and outdoor activities. Visit the Flint RiverQuariumOpens in a new window, which features a 175,000-gallon (660-cubic-metre) aquarium on the banks of the Flint River. Spend a day fishing and boating on the beautiful Lake Chehaw and enjoy a picnic at Riverfront Park. This lovely green area has fun attractions for kids, such as Turtle Grove Play Park and the Festival Springs Fountain splash pad. Stop at the popular Ray Charles PlazaOpens in a new window featuring a sculpture of the famous Albany-born pianist seated at a baby grand. It’s a beautiful spot, with a view of the Flint River. It’s also a good place for a nighttime visit, when the square lights up and Ray Charles music is played.

When visiting Albany, remember that its climate is characterised by significant rainfall, some of which comes in the form of heavy showers and thunderstorms. Summers are usually hot and humid, while winters are mild to cool.
