Frequently asked questions

Which area of Akureyri is best to stay in for pet-friendly hotels?
The best area to stay in Akureyri for pet-friendly hotels is generally the downtown area, as it offers the most convenience and a selection of accommodations.

Downtown Akureyri is compact and walkable, situated along the Eyjafjörður fjord. The main street, Hafnarstræti, runs parallel to the waterfront and is home to many shops, restaurants, and cafes. You'll find the Akureyri Church prominently situated on a hill overlooking the town. This area provides easy access to parks and walking paths, which is ideal for pet owners.

Couples travelling with a pet will find downtown appealing due to the proximity to amenities and walking routes. You can easily stroll along the harbour with your furry friend or explore the Botanical Garden, which is also within walking distance.
What pet-friendly activities should we do in Akureyri?
The best pet-friendly activities in Akureyri involve exploring its natural beauty and designated outdoor spaces.

For those travelling with a dog, a walk along the Eyrarlandsvöllur path is a great option. This paved pathway runs along the coast of Eyjafjörður, offering pleasant views of the fjord and the surrounding mountains. There are plenty of open green spaces adjacent to the path where dogs can enjoy some off-leash time, provided they are well-behaved and under control.

Another excellent choice for pet owners is visiting Kjarnaskógur forest. This large recreational area just south of the town centre has numerous walking trails through the woods, suitable for dogs on leads. There are designated picnic areas and open fields where dogs can run around. It's a wonderful place to enjoy the Icelandic landscape with your pet.
