“Need a car to get to city”

The hotel is about 15 minutes by taxi out of the city. We booked a bit late so had no choice as the inner city hotels were booked. There is a bus service just outside the hotel but it is about every half hour. The bus service stops around 8 pm. Catching a taxi in AVIGNON is not easy as they are not many around. We had to go into a shop and asked the shopowner to ring for us so we could get back to the hotel.

Area recommendations

Inside the old city as all the attractions are within walking distance.

“Hotel Stay in Avignon”

This hotel is located outside of Avignon proper, just off a main road out of town. There is no road noise and there is a bus stop across from the entrance. It is small, clean, tidy and friendly. If you have a car, this is an ideal location. It is near a big modern shopping center and only 10 min. from downtown Avignon with its free parking at L'Italiennes (with free buses to the center of Avignon). I'm glad we stayed at Kyriad Cap Sud. Avignon in July was hot, crowded and noisy, since it was the time of their arts festival. The reception staff was extremely helpful with services and information. The lobby is open all night for after-dinner drinks, alcoholic and non-alcoholic. The breakfast, served in the same room is extra, as in many hotels, but reasonably priced and the selection was varied and ample. You can read the latest French news from their selection of newspapers or the TV and stay as long as you wish. Although the rooms averaged the size of an older American motel, for a small surcharge we were able to add a third person in the room and still not get in each other's way. The air conditioner was functioning perfectly in the hot weather we were having. The parking lot is gated and must be operated by a code at night. I would definitely go back there. I felt safe, comfortable and content. They have a small deck off the dining room that was perfect for hearing the cicadas singing in French and smelling the intoxicating lavender.

Area recommendations

Avignon is a destination all by itself with the Palais du Papes and THE Bridge made famous by the children's song. Nearby is the city of Orange, site of one of three extant Roman amphitheatres in the world with its stage wall still standing. The acoustics are remarkable for a 9,000 seat structure. Not too far away is the Pont du Gard, a Roman aqueduct and engineering feat that brought water from springs in the mountains to the city of Nimes. The countryside is repleat with vineyards under cultivation, rocky outcrops, valleys, mountains and rivers. What more could you want for vistas.

When to go

If you like HOT, HOT weather with the Mistral wind blowing for days at a time, go in July.

Getting there

We landed at CDG airport in Paris, where we were spending 5 days. While we were still in the airport, we booked reserved seats on the TGV, 2nd class. This is the French Train de Grande Vitesse. We had perfectly comfortable seats, the luggage stored, a snack bar, so the 3 hr. trip went by very quickly. The views from the windows were great. We arrived at the Avignon station and found a taxi stand right away to take us to the hotel.

Getting around

We had two days on our own and two days with a French friend living in the area who had a car. It was like having a personal tour guide. It afforded us the opportunity to get outside of Avignon. Walking--the downtown and historic portions of Avignon and Orange are wonderful for walking. Stop at the tourist office in Orange for maps of walking tours. Our hotel in Avignon provided us with brochures and maps of Avignon. Taxis--Abundant, fast and reasonable. City Buses--we weren't there long enough to try them out.

Dining

There are eateries too numerous to mention in and around Avignon, but if you want something else besides a brasserie or outdoor cafe, two restaurants serving typical Provencal fare are worth mentioning. 1) Serge Chenet, out in the countryside is located in an old farm building, but renovated and very well appointed. The food was delicious, beautifully presented and served expertly. The chef made his appearance in the dining room toward the end of our meal and stopped to talk to us. We were able to walk around the property afterwards. I was informed that they have a few rooms available if you want to stay overnight. The location is just lovely. 2) In Avignon proper, the Restaurant L'Essentiel was a top choice. It's white on white decoration made you feel cool right away. They also have an enclosed patio for dining and a few tables on the sidewalk. It's very close to the Palais de Papes. The staff was gracious and professional and helped explain the dishes. The service was excellent. The food was also delicious and beautifully presented.

Events and shows

July is the time of the Avignon Festival. It's so lively with costumed actors mingling with the crowds on the streets hawking their particular off-wall plays and concerts. We saw a sword swallower, Charlie Chaplin, a crystal ball juggler, a lady taking a dip in a plastic wading pool, and the Queen of Hearts, among others, all in the middle of the main plaza. It is not humanly possible to attend all that is offered. July is also the height of the time of the Choregies d'Orange, in Orange, offering operas and concerts, among other productions, in the Roman amphitheatre.
