“Sheraton Langkawi needs renovations and restoration”

The Superior Room we requested was pretty dirty when we got it including travel documentation from the previous guest. The In Room menu was filthy being covered in sauce(?) and the coffee/tea facilities were full of ants. The shower had badly cracked and uneven tiles. There were holes in the floorboards that allowed us to see the ground below. The curtains and other upholstery was dirty. In short the whole room needed renovation and a good cleaning. That said the staff were really good about changing us to another room and everything else we needed. A lot of the hotels and resorts on Langkawi gave the impression that maintenance and upkeep are non existent all over. The Feast restaurant was overpriced for the quality and quantity of food provided. But the Captains Grill and Spice Trader were alright. Chimes was good for a drink especially in Happy Hour. All in all despite the good points and the friendly staff, the stay wasn't worth it tome and I won't be back.

“Perfect Location, Slow Service, Lovely Hotel”

This place was perfectly located to many beach sights and activities. It was a bit far from the mangroves, but you need not spend more than a day there and the taxi is only 20-30 minutes. The restaurant service is incredibly slow, but otherwise the hotel staff are very accommodating. I would highly recommend, as we had a fantastic time at the resort.

Area recommendations
I recommend doing everything! From the Oriental Village (where you can ride cable cars, cross the famous bridge, eat local foods, etc) to the Mangrove tour!

“Fantastic rooms....terrible service!!”

The rooms were spacious and extremely clean and comfortable. We stayed at a garden view villa to the east side of the hotel complex. Eventhough we were very happy with the facilities and cleanliness of the accomodation, the service totally ruined the whole experience for us. You were almost expected to "spend" a certain amount of money in their restaurants and bars to warrant decent service. If you just ordered a burger or a glass of water, we were told by staff many times "just a burger/water...that's all??". And also the prices of food and beverages at the hotel are comprable to that of Australia and in some cases more expensive. After the arrogant attitude of staff and the hyper inflated prices of food, we decided to have all our meals our of the hotel and the night market food is fantastic and dirt cheap in comparison.

“Old but charming”

We stayed at Sheraton for 8 nights in Nov 2011 with my wife. Although the hotel is old and in need of up-date, the rooms are confortable and clean. The service is very good and most of the service is delivered with a great smile. A bit out of the way, but taxis are less than $10Aus to most centers. The food at the hotel is very good but a bit expensive (at Captain Grill). Room service is very good and within the time that promissed.

“Needs to improve service-client relationship”

The hotel is ok and in a very nice neighbourhood. However the beach is very limited and the shore is not quite comfortable for bathing. Foods and beverage service relation is quite poor. Quality of food is very low and choice at the restaurant very limited for a Sheraton hotel. They should not question if a woman can drink a beer or not!!!!! Eventhough it is hosted in a Muslim country. In addition the cultural sensitivity towards non-muslims foreigners and especially women is quite evident... Overall management needs to improve....

Area recommendations
Datai Bay and the North coast for family with young children or couple on a honey moon. Beaches are mice nicer, places to visit are amazing and local people very friendly. However for people who wants to have fun, Cenang is far much nicer and enjoyable.
When to go
From November to April
Getting there
With time through ferry from Kedat. Otherwise with direct flights from KL
Getting around
Renting a car at the airport or getting local taxi drivers.
Dining
Watch out prices.....For instance DO AVOID going to the Perdana Quai at the local Chinese Food Restaurants. They charge you per grams the same price you would pay for a kg of fresh fish in a local market. Always ask the price in advance and cross check the weight!
Outdoors or beach
North coast and the islands. AVOID organized tourist packages with hundreds of people...better organize your own trip and rent apart local boats

“Suited us very much”

Although the hotel needs a little maintenance overall we were very happy and comfortable at this resort. We found the staff absolutely wonderful and the dining great and not over expensive. Although the resort was a little bit out of town this suited us as the price of a taxi anywhere was extremely cheap compared to Australian standards. You also knew how much each trip was going to cost beforehand. We really like the way the accommodation was spread out for privacy and it was no problem getting to your suite if you didn't want to walk with the shuttle always being available. Great pool area. Also we were upgraded on arrival which was very nice. A very relaxing experience overall.

Area recommendations
Definitely Telaga Harbour. Great for inexpensive restaurants overlooking the marina and the luxury boats, felt like we were on the Riviera. The Danna hotel is out of this world. My wife and I were very curious what the building was, we thought it may have been the yacht club. The staff took us on a tour, best hotel we've ever been in anywhere in the world. If we re-visit Langkawi we will definitely be staying there.
When to go
End of October if you don't mind a little rain. Usually rains in the afternoon. Hotels generally quiet.
Getting around
Taxis are so cheap.
What to pack
Not much, very casual. If you've forgotten anything don't worry the island is a tax free haven.
Shopping
Alcohol. Much cheaper than duty free at the airport. Although you usually can only take one litre each back to KL if you are in transit back home you can bring 2 litres each into Australia.
Dining
Telaga Harbour. Good variety of restaurants amd inexpensive. Atmosphere great.

“Good value for money!!!!”

We decided to go to Langkawi while in KL- we stayed at the Sheraton in a sea-facing jacuzzi room for 2 nights and couldn't fault the service and the beautiful room we were in. It looks very close to the airport but you cannot hear a plane coming in or out. While it is in a quiet area of the island, we hired a car on arrival at the airport and had access to everywhere we wanted to go. We booked the sunset dinner cruise through the hotel and were picked up in a mercedes for a wonderful night. We will return to the Sheraton in the future
