The marvel of its age, this splendid château was begun in 1668, taking over 20 years to convert a simple hunting lodge into Europes largest palace. Many of its rooms were stripped during the Revolution and still lie bare, but Versailles grandeur and its magnificent formal gardens are unsurpassed. It lies 20 km west of central Paris; RER Line C5 goes to VersaillesRive Gauche, 700 metres from the entrance.
