What you can expect

  • If you want to discover the Alpine world at its best, you’ll soon realise there’s no escaping the Gornergrat (3,089 metres above sea level).

The highest open-air cogwheel railway in Europe starts in the famous Valais resort of Zermatt and covers a distance of almost 10 km (9339 metres). Negotiating impressive bridges, galleries and tunnels and surrounded by idyllic forests and Alpine meadows, the line passes stone gorges and mountain lakes. And everywhere you look – majestic mountain giants, with the Matterhorn as the crowning glory.
