What you can expect
Put on gloves and wield a Luoyang shovel at a simulated archaeological site. Learn the structure, usage, and safety regulations of the Luoyang shovel, then engage in simulated pit exploration, descending layer by layer to collect soil samples.
Sift through pottery shards, stone artefacts, and other inclusions, observing artefact characteristics using typology. Simulate excavation using professional tools, experiencing archaeological techniques such as scraping and edge finding.
Combine this with replicas of terracotta warrior fragments, and learn about their craftsmanship, military formations, and Qin Dynasty history. Through replicas of coins from the Seven Warring States periods, such as knife coins, ant-nose coins, and Banliang coins, learn about their forms and characteristics of the Warring States era.
Learn the basic principles and procedures of cultural relic restoration, including steps such as cleaning, piecing together, reinforcing, and gluing, and experience the restoration process “from incomplete to complete.”
Understand the complete form of the Terracotta Warriors when they were fired in ancient times, and how modern cultural relic restoration work can restore the integrity and aesthetic appeal of cultural relics while respecting their original historical appearance and minimising intervention.
Explore the original, colourful history of the Terracotta Army, and decipher the mysterious “Chinese Purple” (barium copper silicate) – a synthetic pigment that was gradually lost after the Han Dynasty. Explore the unique chemical composition, production process, and significance of this pigment in the ancient cultural exchange between East and West.
Learn the basic techniques of ancient painting, refer to the colour traces left on the fragments of the Qin Terracotta Army and related research results, and restore the colours of the general terracotta warriors.
Learn about the “Zhai Zi Zhong Guo” inscription and the principles of the model casting method. Create your own versions of the He Zun in moulds, and then display and explain your creations after casting.
