★What is Atami Geigi Kenban?
Atami Geigi Kenban is a cultural hub for traditional performing arts located in Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture. It serves as a training ground where geigi (traditional female entertainers, similar to geisha) practice their art daily. Built in 1954, this historic building is now open to the public and has become a popular destination for visitors to experience geigi culture first-hand.
Atami is one of Japan’s most prominent hanamachi (geisha districts), home to about 50 okiya (geigi houses) and approximately 70 geigi. The Kenban is operated by a federation of these okiya and functions as a rehearsal space for dance and music performances.
