What you can expect

Santo Domingo is overflowing with architectural and historical gems. It is a city that tells a fascinating storey, as it was the first city established in the “New World” by Europeans. Luis, one of our local guides, states: “We like to say that we were the first: we had the first church in America, the first hospital, the first monastery and the first university. All of this here, in Santo Domingo.” You will discover the main sights and secrets of the colonial past by bus, train and on foot on this sightseeing tour.

It begins in the Independence Park before entering the labyrinth of cobbled streets of the old town - known as the Colonial Zone -, declared a World Heritage , to see places that date back to the 15th century and visit the Gothic Cathedral of Santa María and the Alcázar de Colón, which belonged to the family of Christopher Columbus.

Next, hop on a mini train to tour the colonial area before stopping for lunch. You will taste traditional Dominican dishes in a family restaurant. It is a spectacular place in a 16th century colonial building full of character and charm. Complete the day with a stroll along Damas Street, home to the Pantheon and Fort Ozama, and enjoy free time to shop or explore. The colonial area is dotted with cosy tree-lined squares and historic churches.
