Day 2
overnight Gytheio
Visit the cave of Diros, an almost painterly landscape, untouched by human hands, humidity, saltiness, low lighting and the boat calmly crosses with incomparable art and patience sculpted a miracle beyond all imagination, white stalactites and stalagmites, adorning every corner, creating an unparalleled sight that takes your breath away.
Gyrheio the port of Spartans it’s a charming, vibrant town with lots of beautiful neoclassical buildings, and even though it’s on the mainland it has a real “island vibe”. There’s plenty to do as you can walk over to Cranae Island, go for a stroll beside the long waterfront, head to one of the lovely beaches nearby or visit some of the museums. And there’s also a wide variety of food, entertainment and shopping to be found in Gytheio – what more could you need?
Day 3
Sparti - Mystras
Visit the mystical tower town of Mystras - located NW of the city of Sparta, and let yourself be captivated by this destination’s medieval splendour the Palace of the Despots (Anaktora), the beautiful Cathedral of Saint Dimitrios and the impressive Monasteries of Our Lady Pantánassa, and of Οur Lady Perivleptos.
With your mind’s eye visualise Frankish princes and princesses living in palatial mansions; foreign delegations arriving bearing gifts, and peasants, pilgrims or traders filling the bustling streets.
The place that Spartans move after the crusaders. In 1448 the last emperor of Byzantium, was spartan Constantine XI Palaeologos, was crowned here.
The first Byzantine emperor was from Rome the great Constantine 306ad and the last the Constantine from Sparta that 1453 died in the walls of Constantinople fighting the ottomans like king Leonidas fight the Persians 480bc
