Start your tour at the Votivkirche, a neo-Gothic church consecrated in the year 1879. It is built on the very site where an attempt to assassinate Emperor Franz Joseph was made. The emperor's brother took an active role in raising the funds to build the church as thanksgiving to God. The building is made out of white sandstone and one of its most impressive features is the main altar.
Next, you will see the townhall at Rathausplatz, designed by the architect Friedrich Schmidt. The construction of the building took place between 1872 and 1883. It features five towers and its facade is made in Gothic style. Its main tower is 98 metres tall. The building also houses the statue of Rathausmann, which is amongst one of the symbols of Vienna.
As you continue, you will come across the Rathaus park, located across the street from the city hall. The park was built on the instructions of the Emperor Franz Joseph. A military parade ground previously existed here. Dr. Rudolf Siebeck is known to have designed the park. Here, you will find a variety of trees including a Japanese umbrella tree and an old Ginkgo Biloba tree.
Walk by the imperial palace of the Habsburg dynasty rulers, the Hofburg serving today as the official residence of the President of Austria. Built in the 13th century and further expanded several times under the direction of famous architects. You will have a chance to see the Schweizertor, the Swiss gate which features the insignia of Emperor Ferdinand I.
Finally, you will Visit the Peterskirche, a church Built in Baroque style. You will admire the interiors which include frescoes on an oval shaped dome, Baroque pulpit, the organ amongst other beautiful artworks.
