What you can expect

Step into a traditional dojo in Tokyo for a half-day immersion into two iconic Japanese arts: samurai sword (katana) training and Japanese calligraphy—one of the most memorable Things to Do in Tokyo.

After meeting your instructor at the station, you will change into a kimono and hakama and learn basic samurai etiquette, including how to bow and move respectfully in the dojo. Using a practice sword (katana) first, your instructor will guide you through stance, grip, and simple cuts, then teach you stage-style choreography inspired by samurai films so you can strike powerful, photo-ready poses.

Once you are comfortable, eligible guests can feel the thrill of safely cutting prepared targets with a real, sharpened sword (katana) under close supervision. No martial arts experience is required; the focus is on safety, body control, and enjoying the moment rather than physical strength.

After the sword (katana) session, you will sit down for a relaxing introduction to shodo, Japanese calligraphy. Learn how to hold the brush, control the ink, and balance each character. Practice basic strokes, then create your own calligraphy piece, such as your name written in kanji or a favourite word like “samurai” or “peace,” to take home as a unique souvenir.

As a small thank-you, guests who agree to leave an OTA review after the experience will be treated to matcha green tea and a traditional wagashi sweet. This is not a full formal tea ceremony, but a simple, friendly service that lets you enjoy authentic flavours while reflecting on your time with sword (katana) and brush.

This experience is perfect for visitors who want to combine action and calm in one programme: dynamic sword (katana) training followed by mindful calligraphy. It is especially recommended for couples, families with teenagers, and solo travellers who love Japanese history, anime, or traditional arts.

Group sizes are kept small so that each participant receives personalised instruction, and all explanations are provided in simple English. You are welcome to take photos and short videos throughout, and staff will help capture your best samurai poses during and after the lesson.
