What you can expect

Begin your walking tour in Piazza del Popolo, the vibrant heart of Todi and one of Italy’s most harmonious medieval squares. Admire the refined balance between civic and religious authority as you take in the views of the town’s elevated position.

See three extraordinary palaces that frame the square: the Palazzo del Popolo, with its imposing stone façade, crenellated top, and Gothic loggias symbolising medieval communal life; the Palazzo del Capitano, an elegant building marked by bifora windows, stone details, and a monumental staircase once serving administrative functions; and the Palazzo dei Priori, dominated by its distinctive trapezoidal tower, one of the most recognisable symbols of Todi.

Facing the square, at the top of a dramatic staircase, rises the Cathedral of the Santissima Annunziata. This Romanesque-Gothic masterpiece features a stone façade with a central portal, a large rose window, and vertical buttresses that enhance its grandeur. Inside, the Latin-cross layout with three naves hosts finely carved marble and wooden altars, frescoed side chapels, a Renaissance wooden choir, and the powerful fresco of the Last Judgement, which dominates the central nave with emotional intensity.

Continue your walk and admire the exterior of the Teatro Comunale, an elegant 19th-century building that reflects Todi’s cultural life. Its sober yet harmonious façade features classical elements such as pediments and decorated pilasters, with symmetrical entrances reminiscent of theatrical scenography.

Winding through narrow streets and intimate piazzas, reach the Church of San Fortunato, one of Todi’s most significant Gothic monuments. Its stone façade is crowned by a large central rose window, while the tall bell tower, visible from many points in the town, serves as a defining landmark. Inside, the spacious and luminous nave features ribbed vaults and thirteen side chapels, including a notable fresco of the Madonna and Child. In the crypt lies the tomb of Jacopone da Todi, an important poet and Franciscan friar whose life and work embody the spiritual depth of medieval Todi.

Conclude your tour with a sense of having walked through centuries of history, from majestic squares to monumental churches and atmospheric alleys. Panoramic views over the Umbrian valley, combined with the harmony between religious and civic architecture, leave a lasting impression of Todi as a place where culture, spirituality, and everyday life remain deeply connected.
