What you can expect
Discover the wild side of Rio de Janeiro on an immersive hiking adventure through Tijuca National Park, home to one of the largest urban rainforests in the world. Join a passionate local explorer and experience waterfalls, caves, wildlife, and the fascinating history of this unique Atlantic Rainforest.
Our meeting point is at the parking area near the Cachoeira das Almas trail entrance in the Tijuca Forest sector. The location is easily accessible by Uber or taxi.
We begin with a short introduction to the history of Tijuca Forest and its remarkable reforestation storey before starting our hike into the lush Atlantic Rainforest.
Our first stop is Cachoeira das Almas, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in this part of the park. Here you will have time to relax, enjoy the forest atmosphere, and refresh yourself in the clear natural water.
From there, we continue along forest trails towards the famous Caves Circuit, where we explore fascinating natural rock formations such as Belmiro Cave, Archer Cave, and Bats Cave. The trail to the caves takes about 20 minutes with a gentle elevation gain and offers impressive views of the surrounding forest and granite formations.
After exploring the caves, we stop again at nearby waterfalls where you can rest, cool off, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the rainforest. These moments are perfect for relaxing, connecting with nature, and enjoying the unique atmosphere of the forest. I also enjoy sharing small local touches during the experience that make the adventure even more special.
The adventure continues downhill through scenic forest trails where we discover several historical landmarks of Tijuca Forest, including Recanto dos Pintores, the Visitors Centre, Mayrink Chapel, the beautiful Taunay Waterfall, and the historic Alcântara Bridge.
Throughout the hike, keep your eyes open for the incredible biodiversity of the Atlantic Rainforest. It is common to spot monkeys, colourful birds, butterflies, and other wildlife that inhabit this vibrant ecosystem.
The trails are considered easy to moderate and suitable for most people with a basic level of fitness. The terrain is natural and uneven, with stones, roots, and occasionally wet or slippery sections typical of rainforest environments.
At the end of the hike we return to the park entrance, where it is easy to request an Uber or taxi for your return.
Meeting point information:
Mobile signal in the forest area can be limited, so detailed meeting instructions will be sent after booking to ensure a smooth arrival.
