As you drive through traditional kastom villages, hear insights into local customs, legends, and the cultural importance of Mt Yasur to the people of Tanna. This volcano is not just a tourist destination—it’s considered sacred and plays a key role in the spiritual life of the local communities.
After approximately 1.5 to 2 hours on the road, arrive at the base of Mt Yasur. From here, walk up a short but scenic trail (about 10–15 minutes) to reach the volcano’s crater rim. As you climb higher, the air becomes cooler, and the distant sounds of the volcano—rumbling, cracking, and occasionally roaring—grow louder.
Once at the top, stand just 150–200 metres from the crater. Feel the ground tremble beneath your feet and witness eruptions that hurl glowing lava, ash, and volcanic gases into the sky. This natural pyrotechnic display intensifies as night falls, with each burst lighting up the dark sky in dramatic fashion.
