Discover a different side of Tokyo in Sunamachi Ginza, a 600-meter retro shopping street in Koto City. Local residents still shop and eat here every day, surrounded by family-run stores and the nostalgic atmosphere of Showa-era Japan.

This activity combines a local shopping-street adventure with authentic sumo. Choose your own food, bring it into the venue, learn about sumo traditions, meet experienced wrestlers, and step onto the dohyo for a hands-on challenge.

1. Explore Sunamachi Ginza and create your own local feast

Please arrive 30–45 minutes before the scheduled start. Walk through the shopping street and discover local favourites such as yakitori, croquettes, traditional sweets, seafood, and drinks. Choose what looks appealing, interact with local shopkeepers, and create your own selection of Japanese street food to enjoy beside the dohyo.

This is a bring-your-own experience. Food and drinks are not included in the ticket price and are purchased separately by each guest.

1. Discover the history and traditions of sumo

Take your seat beside the dohyo, the traditional sumo ring, and experience Japan’s national sport up close. An English-speaking host will explain the history, rituals, rules, and techniques of sumo.

Learn about sumo’s connection to Japanese culture and Shinto traditions. Discover shiko and suriashi, learn how a bout begins, and see how balance, timing, strength, and technique determine the outcome. Experienced former professional sumo wrestlers demonstrate traditional ceremonies, powerful techniques, and live bouts directly in front of you.

1. Step onto the dohyo and challenge a wrestler

This is more than a show. Guests can enter the ring, try basic sumo movements, and experience the sport for themselves. No previous athletic experience is required. The challenge is friendly and supervised.

If you choose to participate, our staff will help you change in a private area and prepare you to wear a mawashi, the traditional sumo belt. Step barefoot onto the clay dohyo and face a wrestler in a safe and exciting sparring challenge. Push with all your strength, learn how to keep your balance, and experience the power and technique of sumo from inside the ring. Participation is optional, so you can also watch, take photos, and cheer for other guests.

1. Meet the wrestlers and capture the moment

After the demonstrations and challenges, chat with the wrestlers and ask questions about their training, daily life, and experiences in sumo. Finish your visit with memorable photos together on the dohyo and take home a unique Tokyo memory.
