Activity itinerary

St Columba's Church (Eaglais na h-Aoidhe)

  • 30m
We will have around 30 minutes at this site to allow you to explore it to the fullest. There are no facilities at this site. There is no fee for the exhibition but donations are welcome. Aignish Farm Raiders Monument On the walk way to the Church is this memorial, one of three dedicated to the land struggles experienced on the Island. This one is for the Aignish Farm Raiders. It stands proudly in remembrance of the people of Point (the local area) who fought an oppressive use of their land, potentially going to jail, which eventually forced reforms to Scottish law. Eaglais na h-Aoidhe, St Columba's Church This is a chapel from the medieval period and is an Ancient Monument and Grade A building. St Catan, a contemporary of St Columba, founded the site in the 6th century. The site became the burial site for our families namesake, the MacLeods of Lewis.

Iolaire Memorial

  • 30m
We will have around 30 minutes at this site to allow you to explore it to the fullest. There are no facilities at this site. There is no fee. The Iolaire Monument is dedicated to those sailors who drowned on New Years Day 1919 must have experienced. So wild, so cold and so close to home. Sinking at the entrance of Stornoway harbour, on what should have been such a joyous day, 280 islanders, coming home from fighting on the Front, struck rocks metres from the shore, with 205 dying. You can see paintings of some of those soldiers at the Airport and at various locations around Stornoway.

Lewis War Memorial

  • 45m
We will have around 45 minutes at this site to allow you enough time to walk to the Memorial and take in the breath-taking views of Stornoway and over to the mainland. There are no facilities at this site and there is no fee. The memorial is an 85ft tall granite tower dedicated to those men from the Island who never came home from the Great War and those who perished in the terrible 1919 sinking of HMY Iolaire - which is visited later in the tour.

The Blackhouse, Arnol

  • 45m
  • Admission ticket not included
We will have around 45 minutes at this site. There is an entrance fee for the attraction and there are toilets and limited vending machine options. This attraction offers what we call, the smell of the island. They have a peat burning fire in the middle of a dwelling house which was shared by family and animals alike. The smell of peat reminds us of our innocent childhoods playing in these areas. Take some time to check out the model 1920s house as well, as a sign of how living progressed on the island with the advent of sewerage and electricity.

Comunn Eachdraidh Nis

  • 1h
We will have around 60 minutes at this site. There is no entrance fee but a donation is strongly encouraged. There are toilets and a café at this site. This museum, shop and cafe is dedicated to the local history of the area, which reflects the history of the island people as a whole. Two gallery spaces are dedicated to seasonal exhibitions throughout the year.

Museum Nan Eilean Stornoway

  • 1h
Optionally on the return we can drop guests at the Museum nan Eilean. Here you can find out how the island and its people are shaped by the land, sea and history. There is also a cafe and shop available along with toilets and a chance to look around parts of the Lews Castle and grounds too. On the way back into town (a 15 minute walk) you can stop at the Woodland Centre for refreshment, shopping and information.
