Roman municipality, capital of the homonymous Longobard Duchy and later an important centre of the Papal States, Spoleto still fascinates today with its enchanting monuments, witness to a glorious past whose echoes reach down to us.
The tour starts in Piazza della Libertà and, along the path, you will pass through the two ancient city gates, where the roman streets passed under. The via Flaminia, coming from Rome, passed through the arch of Monterone, built off mighty limestone stones to defend the city. Equally, the splendid arch of Drusus, built next to a roman temple, gives an idea of the monumentality of the gateway. Excavations have also mad it possible to see the ancient ground floor and make interesting discoveries, so its a must to pass through here.
Strolling through the city streets you will arrive near the Rocca di Albornoz, placed to dominate the city on top of a hill, it is still a key landmark of the city. Skirting the structure you will have the opportunity to enjoy one of the most fascinating views of Umbria, that of the bridge of Towers and of the woods surrounding Spoleto.
Descending from the upper part of the city, tou will arrive at Piazza Duomo, where stands the church of Santa Maria Assunta, the Spoleto's Dome, in which romanesque style and renaissance taste manage to merge in a beautiful example of christian architecture.
