Venture out of Reykjavík to explore the gorgeous natural features of Iceland's south coast. Trek across the craggy, frozen surface of a massive glacier, and visit 2 waterfalls as you learn about the country's intriguing natural history and Viking past.

Get picked up from your hotel or meet in the centre of Reykjavík and grab a comfortable seat on the bus. As you drive, you can use an individual tablet for in-depth facts and resources about the areas you visit. Make your first stop at the Sólheimajökull Glacier, which flows from the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap. Slip crampons over your shoes and trek out across the vast surface of this incredible river of ice, listening as a certified glacier guide describes the forces behind the cracks, crevasses, and tunnels int he ice.

Continue on to the Skógarfoss waterfall, which plummets majestically from a 196-foot (60-metre) cliff. Climb up the 527 steps if you'd like to take in the view from above the cascade, and then visit the Seljalandsfoss waterfall. Walk behind the falls for a peekaboo look at the tumbling water and the landscape in the background, and hear about the area's Viking heritage as you look out at the volcanoes of the Westman Islands before returning to the city.

Even under a bit of cloud this was a spectacular and memorable experience. From the moment the guide welcomed us aboard we knew we were in for a treat. I would highly recommend this tour for anyone with average fitness, the climb up to the top of the glacier is a little strenuous but not very long and there are plenty of pauses to catch your breath while learning about glaciers. The trip starts in combination with the South Coast tour with a multi-language, GPS triggered, audio guide giving an interesting commentary, supplemented by the guide's own points of interest. Those on the glacier walk were dropped off and introduced to the guide who fitted us for crampons. We were them lead us on a 15 minute walk to the terminus of the glacier where crampons were put on and a quick safety briefing was done. The guide, Mike, was very knowledgeable and friendly, pointing out all kinds features on the glacier. Afterwards we were picked up and taken to visit the Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss.

Our first excursion in Iceland was absolutely amazing. The scenery on your 1.5h drive to the south coast are gorgeous. Once there we took a tour of the glacier with a suprisingly small group of only 1 other person. The glacier is a must climb. Spend the extra money. Coming back we stopped at the 2 main waterfalls. Our Bus driver and tour guide were fantastic. If you're going to iceland I was 100% recommend The south coast and glacier day trip home.
