What you can expect

  • Explore one of the most outstanding examples of Greater Greece architecture with a day trip to the ancient Valley of the Temples of Agrigento. Roam the ruins of monumental, Doric-style temples while soaking in panoramic views of the craggy coastline.

    Begin your day with convenient pickup from your Palermo hotel, board a comfortable vehicle, and head south about 2 hours towards the coast of Sicily, stopping to grab a hot cup of coffee along the way. Upon arrival at the UNESCO World Heritage Site, your self-guided tour starts with the Temple of Juno at the top of hill. Meander your way among the 5th-century columns as you gaze out upon the sparkling Mediterranean Sea.

    Continue downhill for about a mile towards the Temple of Concordia, one of the most ancient Greek edifices still existing today thanks to its well-preserved architecture. Nearby, you can marvel at Byzantine tombs dating back to the 4th century AD, including the supposed tomb of Greek tyrant Theron of Acragas. Travel through large stone gates to see the Temple of Zeus, built to celebrate Rome's victory over Carthage in the Second Punic War, and then on to the earthquake-ravaged Temple of Heracles, the most ancient in the valley.

    Once you've had enough to time to unleash your inner archaeologist, grab lunch at a local cafe. You can finish the day wandering through the ancient streets of Agrigento or paying a visit to the Regional Archaeological Museum before enjoying a relaxing drive back to Palermo.
