What you can expect
The Coconut Coast north of Salvador da Bahia is one of Brazil's most captivating stretches of coastline. The tour along the Estrada do Coco reveals a diversity of landscapes ranging from shifting white sand dunes to historical cultural treasures and spectacular river mouths.
The journey begins at Salvador International Airport and continues north for about 60 kilometres, with each stop revealing a unique facet of this tropical region.
The first stop of the day is Praia de Jauá. The offshore coral reef then transforms the Atlantic Ocean into a chain of mirror-smooth, crystal-clear natural pools.
Further north, the scenery changes in Arembepe, the fishing village. One scenic highlight of the route is Barra do Jacuípe. Here, the calm, dark Rio Jaquipe river meets the wild ocean in a wide curve. The wide sandbanks, which change shape depending on the tide, and the dense coconut groves create a picture-postcard setting.
Jacuípe is the perfect place for a swim break, as you can easily switch between the refreshing, gentle waves of the river and the surf of the ocean.
For the subsequent lunch, the nearby Guarajuba is a good option, or if you prefer, you can eat here.
This modern resort has excellent infrastructure.
The spacious beach restaurants, known as barracas, serve freshly caught fish and traditional Bahian specialities right on the fine sand. The final destination of the trip is the charming fishing village of Praia do Forte. The heart of the village is the completely car-free, lovingly designed Alameda do Sol promenade, which invites you to stroll along with its elegant boutiques, cafés, and shops. At the end of the promenade, right next to the historic white fishermen's church Igreja de São Francisco, is the world-renowned TAMAR project.
An optional visit to this sea turtle sanctuary is the perfect way to round off the day. In the sea tanks, you can observe huge leatherback turtles, stingrays and nurse sharks up close.
Before embarking on the relaxed return journey along the coastal road, the late afternoon on the beach of Praia do Forte offers the opportunity to look back on the day with an unforgettable view of the sparkling sea.
