The city was founded in 1882 during the reign of Mawlāy Hassan as a military base. from where he launched expeditions to subjugate the peoples of the region of the Sous River (Oued Sous) and the neighbouring mountainous regions. Barrage Youssef Ibn Tachfine

The dam of the Youssef Ibn Tachfin dam, 707 metres long, has created an artificial lake but the impression of freshness is not necessarily there in this hot region of southern Morocco. Leaning on the edges of the Anti-Atlas, the dam is 85 metres high: a beautiful structure installed on one of the arms of the Massa wadi. The lake stretches beautifully over seven kilometres in length: this water reserve is intended to irrigate the Chtouka plain, which receives little rainfall, to grow vegetables and citrus fruit there, as in the neighbouring Souss plain.
