What you can expect
Discover Riisitunturi National Park on a relaxed summer day trip from Rovaniemi with Timo, a local guide originally from Posio.
For Timo, Riisitunturi is much more than a place to visit. He grew up in Posio and has been exploring these landscapes since childhood. Coming from a family that spent much of its free time hiking and enjoying nature, Riisitunturi became familiar to him long before he started bringing guests here as a guide.
This experience is designed for travellers who want to discover Lapland’s nature without worrying about driving, routes or planning a long day trip on their own. Timo choices you up in Rovaniemi, takes care of the journey and guides you through one of the places he knows best.
Riisitunturi is famous for its snowy winter landscapes, but from spring to autumn the national park goes through a beautiful transformation of its own. In May and sometimes even into early summer, snow can still remain on the fell, and you may even encounter some of Riisitunturi’s famous snow-covered trees. As summer arrives, long bright days and the Midnight Sun bring almost endless daylight to the landscape. By September, autumn colours transform the forests and fells into shades of yellow, orange and red. Every part of the season offers a different way to experience Riisitunturi.
The hike is easy and relaxed rather than performance-focused. There is plenty of time to stop, take photos, enjoy the views and simply experience the silence around you. One of the highlights along the way is Ikkunalampi, a small and picturesque pond surrounded by the peaceful landscape of Riisitunturi.
During the hike, you’ll stop for a traditional Lappish BBQ lunch in nature. It is a chance to sit down, enjoy good food and experience an important part of Finnish outdoor culture. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available on request.
Throughout the day, Timo shares stories about Riisitunturi, Posio, Lapland’s nature and local life. These are not only stories learned for guiding — they come from growing up in the region and returning to these landscapes year after year.
Lapland’s weather is part of the experience. A clear summer day can offer wide views across forests and lakes, while clouds, mist and changing light can give Riisitunturi an entirely different atmosphere. There is no need to rush: the day is planned around enjoying the national park at a comfortable pace.
Depending on the schedule and the wishes of the group, there may also be an opportunity to stop at Pentik-Mäki in Posio, the home of the well-known Finnish Pentik ceramics, for a glimpse into local design, culture and craftsmanship.
The tour is guided in English or Finnish. Timo also speaks some Spanish and is happy to use it when helpful during the day.
If you are looking for an easy and well-organized way to experience Lapland beyond Rovaniemi, this is a day to slow down, enjoy nature and discover Riisitunturi with someone who has known these landscapes since childhood.
