Overview

  • Road Town's history told through the voices who lived it — a jailed islander, a rum-runner, the woman credited with inventing the Painkiller sharing her original recipe. This isn't just a fact sheet on a walk; it's dramatised local storytelling woven into every stop, at your own pace. Discover Queen Elizabeth II's 1966 visit to Road Town, hear historical accounts of colonial life, and take part in photo and video challenges at each landmark.

At the end of your tour, everything is compiled into a personalised photo and video album, emailed straight to you — a keepsake of the walk that's entirely your own.

The tour runs on your mobile through the free Actionbound app, with audio and text at every stop, and works offline once downloaded. Start at Crafts Alive Village, a short walk from the cruise pier, and choose your stops in any order. Prefer less walking? Taxis are available in Road Town, so you can ride to the furthest stops and walk the rest. One booking covers your whole group.

Activity itinerary

Crafts Alive Village

  • 15m
Main Street. Let's start at Crafts Alive. Note that this was once Road Town's original waterfront before land reclamation reshaped the harbour, Main Street is lined with 18th- and 19th-century colonial buildings — now home to shops, cafés and boutiques. Walk its length to see how the town's history is built into the street itself. This colourful open-air market is made up of local artisan stalls selling handmade jewellery, art, clothing, and island snacks. Browse at your own pace, chat with vendors, and pick up a souvenir — bargaining is welcome. Saturdays add a farmers' market alongside the craft stalls.

Road Town

  • 15m
The Sunday Morning Well. A modest well with deep significance: local tradition holds this as the site where enslaved people gathered to hear news of Emancipation on 1 August 1834. Today it remains a place of quiet reflection, and takes centre stage each August during the BVI's Emancipation Festival.

H.M. Prison Museum

  • 15m
  • Admission ticket not included
The territory's 18th-century colonial prison, built from local stone and coral. Now preserved as a museum, its cells and gates offer a stark window into colonial-era justice, before and after Emancipation in 1834. Exterior can be viewed and photographed from the street at any time.

Pusser's

  • 20m
A working store and pub with roots in nearly 500 years of Royal Navy rum tradition. Pusser's Rum revived the historic naval "tot" recipe, and this is also where the storey of the famous Painkiller cocktail began. Stay as long as you like to eat, drink, or browse.

St. George's Episcopal (Anglican) Church

  • 15m
Built in 1840, the oldest Anglican church in the Virgin Islands, still standing after nearly two centuries of hurricanes and change. Step inside to see its stained glass, memorial plaques, and 19th-century cemetery — and hear how the church's history reflects the colonial social order, through emancipation, to today.

Old Government House Museum

  • 10m
The Old Governor's House. Built in 1866 as the territory's seat of colonial governance — housing the Governor's Office, Treasury, Customs, Post Office and High Court Registry all under one roof. The upper storey was lost to fire in 2001, but the building still stands as a cornerstone of Road Town's civic history.

Sir Olva Georges Plaza

  • 15m
Named after the only BVI Islander ever knighted, this plaza was once the social and trading heart of Main Street. It still hosts a farmers' market on Saturdays, and fresh catch from Anegada fisherfolk on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

112 Main St

  • 5m
The Island Sun Newspaper Office. Founded here in 1962 by Carlos Downing and Esme De Castro, the Island Sun remains the BVI's oldest running newspaper. Contributors over the decades included aviation pioneer Sir Alan Cobham, and the paper was commemorated on two BVI postage stamps in 2002.

Old Government House Museum

  • 30m
  • Admission ticket not included
Built in 1899 as the governor's residence, this colonial manor became a public museum in 2002. Explore restored period rooms, artefacts and ceremonial items, tropical gardens, and the storey of its recovery after Hurricane Irma.

Queen Elizabeth II Park

  • 20m
A 4.7-acre green retreat named for the Queen's 1966 visit, with paved paths, a colonial-style gazebo, tropical planting, and views out over the harbour. A good spot to pause, rest, or take in the birdlife.

J.R. O'Neal Botanic Gardens

  • 20m
  • Admission ticket not included
A 4-acre botanical sanctuary named for conservationist Joseph Reynold O'Neal, with a rainforest section, cactus garden, lily pond with koi, and a medicinal herb garden. Watch for hummingbirds, butterflies, and native birds throughout.
