What you can expect
Begin your journey at the Giardino Ibleo, the oldest of the city's four main parks. This oasis of peace offers magnificent views over the Irminio Valley. As you stroll down the elegant avenue, notice the three churches nestled within the greenery: San Giacomo Apostolo, San Vincenzo Ferreri, and the Church of the Cappuccini.
Next to the garden, see the symbol of Ragusa Ibla, Portale di S. Giorgio (St George’s Gate), dated to the 17th century. Exit the gardens and head up Corso XXV Aprile, the elegant “living room” of Ibla. This pedestrian street is lined with charming boutiques, artisan shops selling local ceramics, and historical buildings.
Take a moment to look at the wrought-iron balconies and the grotesque masks (mascheroni) carved into the limestone corbels of the palaces above you.
As the street opens up, find Piazza Pola, home to the Church of San Giuseppe. Step inside to see its unique elliptical interior and the stunning silver statue of Saint Joseph. Just a few steps away is the “Conversation Club,” an 1860 Neoclassical building where the local aristocracy once met to discuss politics and gossip. Its red damask walls and crystal chandeliers still whisper stories of old Sicily.
Before reaching the final destination, turn onto Via Capitano Bocchieri to admire Palazzo La Rocca. This palace features some of the most famous balconies in Sicily, supported by corbels depicting scenes of daily life: musicians, lovers, and various characters that seem to watch the passersby with a silent, stony gaze.
Your tour culminates at the magnificent Duomo di San Giorgio. Standing at the top of a monumental staircase and positioned at a slight angle to the square below, the Duomo dominates the view with its three-tiered facade and “wedding cake” dome. It is one of the highest expressions of Sicilian Baroque in the world. As the afternoon light hits the golden limestone, the cathedral literally glows, providing a breathtaking end to your walk.
