Roman Theatre

The theatre was built during the reign of Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius (138–161 CE) and was dedicated to him. It is one of the best-preserved Roman theatres in the world and is still used today for performances, concerts, and other events. The theatre is divided into three sections: the orchestra, the cavea, and the stage. The orchestra is the semicircular area in front of the stage where the performers would perform. The cavea is the tiered seating area that rises up behind the orchestra. The stage is the raised platform at the back of the theatre where the performers would speak their lines. In addition to being used for performances, the Roman Theatre is also a popular tourist destination. Visitors can walk through the theatre and learn about its history. There are also two small museums located in the theatre, the Jordan Museum of Popular Traditions and the Jordan Folklore Museum.
