What you can expect

A pleasant hike along Levada do Castelejo offers you a stunning perspective of Madeira's north coast. Admire the views of sleepy villages and ghost towns set against impressive cliffs, and discover the rare flora and fauna that thrive on the island.

Banana plantations, terraced fields and emerald forests await you in this magnificent natural setting, which offers unique views of Maderira's landscape such as the high inland peaks and the Penha da Águia (Eagle's Rock).

This impressive levada (aqueduct) irrigates the lands of Santo António and Sao Martinho. Walk along the levada and discover the ghost town of Faja, where approximately 30 people used to work and live. The town was abandoned in the 1980s, leaving charming green-covered houses behind.

Listen as your guide describes the history of the levadas, the purpose of their construction and the lives of locals today as you hike the forested, rugged, and volcanic setting of Madeira.
