Our meeting point will be at one of Pontevedra's most iconic sites, in front of the Monument to the Heroes of Pontesampaio and the beautiful, stately tree-lined promenade, flanked by some of the administrative buildings that best represent the city's rebirth after it was named the provincial capital.
We will continue the tour to discover the essentials of Pontevedra: its stunning historic centre. The first site we will encounter is the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, a symbol of the power of the seafarers' guild and of the city's maritime might centuries ago. Next, we will see the medieval ruins of what was once Galicia's major loading and unloading port.
Our tour continues along the banks of the beautiful Lérez River, where we will enjoy views of the Burgo Bridge, the oldest bridge in the city and the one around which present-day Pontevedra developed. After this, we will arrive at one of everyone's favourite spots, the Municipal Market. If Rias Baixas is known for one thing, it is its gastronomy.
From here, we will come across some of Pontevedra's most charming squares, all named after the trades that were once carried out there: Plaza da Pedreira, Plaza da Leña, and Plaza da Verdura. Of course, we shouldn't forget the Plaza do Teucro, one of the most elegant squares in the city, adorned with local heraldry representing many of the great houses of yesteryear.
Next, we will visit Plaza de la Herrería, one of the city's largest, liveliest, and greenest squares, where the Gothic Convent of San Francisco stands above a beautiful camellia garden.
We will conclude our tour at the Church of the Pilgrim, a symbol of the city and a meeting point for pilgrims on the Portuguese Way to Santiago.
