What you can expect

  • A car collects you from your hotel and takes you to Pokhara airport. The helicopter flies north between Dhaulagiri (8,167 m) and the Nilgiri peaks, and the land below changes from forested hills to rock and glacier.

The pilot lands at about 4,190 m on the moraine at North Annapurna Base Camp. This is the side of Annapurna I that Maurice Herzog's team climbed in 1950, the first ascent of an 8,000 m peak. Few trekkers reach it on foot.

You have 15 to 20 minutes on the ground. The time is short on purpose: at this height the air is thin, and people coming straight from Pokhara can feel dizzy or short of breath. Move slowly and tell the pilot if you feel unwell.

On the way back the flight passes over the Panchakunda (Narchyang) lakes, which can be frozen or blue depending on the season, before returning to Pokhara and your hotel.
