What you can expect

  • Discover the beauty of Peneda-Gerês National Park, Portugal's only national park, on a guided tour. Established in 1971, this park preserves one of the country's most important natural and cultural treasures. Covering approximately 70,000 hectares (173,000 acres), the park stretches across the municipalities of Melgaço, Arcos de Valdevez, Ponte da Barca, Terras de Bouro, and Montalegre.

Explore impressive mountains, crystal-clear rivers, waterfalls, natural lagoons, and ancient forests that make this park a true sanctuary of nature. Peneda-Gerês is home to iconic species such as the Iberian wolf, roe deer, the Garrano—a small native wild horse—and the golden eagle, as well as a rich variety of rare and endemic plant species.

However, Peneda-Gerês is much more than its natural beauty. It is also a place where traditions remain alive. The stone villages, traditional granaries known as espigueiros, grazing livestock, and centuries-old farming practices tell the storey of communities that have lived in harmony with these mountains for generations.

Throughout your journey, visit some of the park's most remarkable locations, enjoy breathtaking panoramic views, and learn about the area's geology, biodiversity, history, and cultural heritage.
