What you can expect

  • Step into the past to explore the contributions and brave uprisings of enslaved people on a guided walking tour in New York City. Delve into the compelling history of the Underground Railway, the fight for abolition, and the heroic people who risked their lives to save others.

Begin your tour at an archaeological site and memorial dedicated to enslaved Africans in colonial America. Continue to the site of a former station on the Underground Railway as your guide explains the revolts, kidnappings, and dramatic escapes that occurred during the era of American slavery.

Listen to the tales of courage and triumph of real New Yorkers who risked their lives and properties to help people escape slavery. Understand how the railway operated with a network of clandestine routes and safe houses used by enslaved African Americans to escape into free states and Canada.
