What you can expect

Santa Maria di Monteoliveto, best known as Sant’Anna dei Lombardi, can be considered the emblem of the Tuscan Renaissance in Naples. Its foundation dates back to 1411. The complex of Sant’Anna was particularly dear to the Aragonese Dynasty, especially Alfonso II, who used to visit it on a daily basis. The church’s nave, with its five chapels on each side aisle, showcases the fruitful relationships between foreign and Neapolitan artists of the mid-1500s, including the Spanish painter Pedro Rubiales and the Tuscan Giorgio Vasari, who splendidly frescoed the sacristy’s vault. Moreover, a young Michelangelo sculpted a puttino, which is still to be admired. Equally important is the Compianto sul Cristo Morto, remarkable for the accuracy of its details in expressing both the energy of the characters and the emotional force of their movements. Visitors can also enjoy the visit to the evocative Hypogeum.
