What you can expect
Join us on a cultural immersion in the vibrant life of contemporary Yucatecan Mayans. Departing early from Merida, we head to Yaxcabá, visiting the Mayan community of Yaxunah, a short distance from Chichen Itzá.
Ancestral Cooking Workshop “Cochinita Pibil”:
Upon arrival, be greeted in the Mayan language by community members, predominantly women, ready to teach you the ancestral techniques of preparing Mayan food. Engage in the preparation of “Cochinita Pibil,” a traditional dish cooked in the Pib oven and wrapped in banana leaves. You'll learn to grind the ingredients for the recado, a condiment, and witness the slow cooking process in the underground oven. The option for a vegetarian meal is available.
Corn Dip and Milpa Visit:
Explore the sustainable cornfield, understand the Milpa production process, and learn about challenges faced by producers. Taste various corn-based drinks, known as pozoles and atoles, reflecting the importance of corn to the Mayans.
Crafts Workshop:
Visit a hammock weaving workshop where skilled artisans share their expertise. Support the Káanbal Kuxtal group, contributing to the education of the community's children through product sales.
Yaxunah Archaeological Zone:
Discover the Yaxunah archaeological zone, an ancient Mayan city with historical significance. Walk or bike to explore its wonders, connected by the longest Sac-be (white road) in the Mayan World.
Cenote Lol-Ha:
Cool off in Cenote Lol-Ha, an open-type cenote with crystal-clear waters. Enjoy a refreshing swim before unearthing your cooked Cochinita Pibil for a delightful ancestral Mayan lunch.
Return to Merida:
As the experience concludes, we'll start our journey back to Merida, marking the end of this enriching cultural adventure.
