Built at the behest of Lovere's wealthy merchants in the late 15th century, this basilica is an extraordinary example of civic patronage and innovative spirit. Its anonymous architect introduced the modern barrel vault, while the painter Ferramola decorated it with elegant coffered motifs. Eager to further enhance the building, the churchwardens purchased the organ from Brescia’s Old Cathedral, which had been adorned with decorations by Moretto.
The notables and residents of Lovere spared no expense: they wanted a basilica that would be a symbol of the town’s wealth and pride. The result is a striking building where Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassical styles coexist in a harmonious blend, making it a must-see for visitors to the town.
