What you can expect

Discover one of the Lisbon region's best-kept natural treasures with an entry ticket to the Samouco Salt Pans, a unique wetland located just across the Vasco da Gama Bridge. Explore centuries-old salt pans where traditional sea salt production coexists with one of the richest bird habitats in the Tagus Estuary.

Managed by the Samouco Salt Pans Environmental Management Protection Foundation, a non-profit organisation established in 2000, the reserve is dedicated to preserving both its remarkable biodiversity and its centuries-old artisanal salt-making heritage.

A visit to the Samouco Salt Pans offers not only the opportunity to discover the area's exceptional wildlife but also its unique cultural heritage, shaped by generations of traditional salt workers who continue to preserve artisanal production techniques.

Walk along clearly marked trails through a peaceful landscape of salt ponds, marshes, and lagoons while observing flamingos, herons, stilts, avocets, and many other bird species. The reserve is home to more than 200 species of birds, making it one of Portugal's premier birdwatching destinations.

Whether you're a nature lover, photographer, or simply looking to escape the city for a few hours, the Samouco Salt Pans provide an unforgettable experience where nature, history, and sustainable traditions come together.
