What you can expect

  • Slow down and immerse yourself in the quiet beauty of Lapland on a peaceful canoeing day trip along the Ounasjoki River — Finland’s longest free-flowing river. This gentle 9 km daytime journey from Elves Village to Hossansalmi is all about calm movement, unspoiled nature, and the soothing rhythm of life on the river.

The adventure begins with a short transfer from Levi to the village of Köngäs. There, at the atmospheric Tonttula (Elves Village), we launch the canoes onto the river. Your experienced local guide will then introduce you to basic canoeing techniques and safety, before we set off downstream at a relaxed and unhurried pace.

As you paddle, you’ll notice how clear the water is — in many places you can see all the way to the riverbed below. Forested banks, open skies, and long stretches of untouched shoreline create a sense of space and stillness that is increasingly rare. This river is a haven for wildlife: keep an eye out for water birds resting along the banks, and with a bit of luck you may even spot reindeer or a moose coming down to drink at the water’s edge.

Midway through the trip, we stop at a beautiful sandy beach, a quiet spot surrounded by complete silence and nature. On warm summer days, you can take a refreshing swim in the clear river water. During the break, we enjoy filled sandwiches, small snacks, and a warm or cold drink depending on the weather — a simple moment to sit, breathe, and listen to the sounds of the river.

After the break, we continue paddling towards Hossansalmi, letting the river carry us gently to the endpoint. The experience is not about distance or speed, but about presence — feeling the water beneath the canoe, the sun on your face, and the calm of Lapland’s summer wilderness.

This canoeing tour on the Ounasjoki is a deeply relaxing nature experience, perfect for those who want to slow down, observe wildlife, and experience Lapland from the water in the most peaceful way possible.
