What you can expect
Kunming, China's “City of Eternal Spring,” greets you with mild air, blue skies, and a rhythm shaped by 3,000 years of history. On this private two-day journey, your day starts the moment you land: your driver is waiting to take you straight into the city's green heart.
Your first stop is Green Lake Park, where willow-lined paths curl around still water and locals practice tai chi in the morning light. Wander at your own pace past teahouses and stone bridges, then cross to the Yunnan Military Academy next door - a century-old campus of yellow archways and drill grounds that trained generals fifteen years before its more famous Whampoa counterpart. Walk the same corridors where cadets once marched and feel the weight of a school that helped shape modern China.
As afternoon fades, settle into an old-school Yunnan restaurant for qi guo ji, chicken slow-steamed in a clay pot over rising steam - a Kunming classic. Later, stop by a rose-cake workshop where the city's signature pastry, a flaky pocket of candied rose petals, comes fresh from the oven; watch it made, then taste it still warm.
Wake to breakfast at your hotel before heading to Dounan Flower Market in Kunming's Chenggong district. Long tables stretch out under corrugated roofs, stacked floor to ceiling with roses, lilies, and carnations sorted by colour and size; locals say seven of every ten cut flowers sold in China pass through this single market. Wander the aisles, watch wholesalers haggle in rapid Yunnan dialect, and pick a bloom or two to carry with you.
Lunch is Kunming's most famous dish, guo qiao mi xian - “crossing-the-bridge rice noodles” - served with a broth so hot it keeps cooking the raw ingredients you stir in tableside. Round out the trip with roast duck from nearby Yiliang county before heading back to your hotel, the airport, or the train station to continue your journey.
Throughout both days, your English-speaking guide walks with you, translating history, ordering off local menus, and pointing you to the tables and workshops that do not appear on typical group-tour maps - all from a private van that's yours alone for the trip.
