Experience the Arctic in a season when time feels upside down. On this guided evening hike just outside Kirkenes, you’ll walk into open tundra under the midnight sun—when daylight lingers late and the sky never fully turns dark. After a short transfer from town, follow your guide onto a trail that climbs steadily to a ridge with wide views across Kirkenes and the Bøkfjord coastline.
What makes this hike unforgettable is the light itself. Late in the evening, the sun still sits above the horizon, casting a warm glow over the fjord and surrounding hills. Kirkenes lies at 69.7° N, well within the Arctic Circle, which is why this phenomenon is possible for a limited summer window. Even when the route is familiar, the scenery changes with every step as the low sun stretches shadows and turns the landscape gold.
Along the way, weather permitting, you’ll stop for a break with a hot drink and a snack—an easy, cosy pause before continuing. The hike covers around 5 km on uneven tundra terrain with some elevation change, including dirt paths and rocky sections, so a basic level of fitness is recommended.
Finish back in Kirkenes after 2.5 hours with the rare feeling of having spent an evening outdoors—without ever needing a sunset.
