What you can expect
【Welcome to Shodō】
Start your journey with a warm welcome and a lively introduction to the rich history and philosophy of Japanese calligraphy. Shodō—“the way of writing”—is not just about making beautiful characters. It’s a joyful, expressive, and calming art form that has been loved for centuries.
【History & Origins】
Hear fascinating stories about how Shodō evolved from Chinese calligraphy and grew into a uniquely Japanese style by adding hiragana and katakana. Then, try holding the fude (brush) the traditional way. From your hand posture to your breathing, every detail makes the experience even more fun.
【Flow with Grace】
Follow the guidance of your instructor and feel your brushstrokes become smooth and natural. With each stroke, you’ll discover how relaxing and satisfying it is to write with both grace and intention.
【The Ritual of Ink】
Next, experience the charm of preparing the ink with a traditional suzuri (inkstone). Everyone shares one inkstone and takes turns grinding the ink—like a friendly team effort. The soft sound and rhythm make this a calming yet playful ritual that connects you to the spirit of Shodō.
【Mindful Brushstrokes】
Before writing characters, loosen up with simple lines and brushstrokes. This is like a moving meditation—fun, soothing, and a great way to find your focus. Feel your mind relax as the brush glides across the paper.
【Write Your Name in Japanese Kanji】
Let’s explore which Kanji fits your name best, and enjoy writing it together with brush and ink. A fun and creative way to take home your very own piece of Japanese culture!
【Choose Your Kanji】
Now comes the exciting part—choose your favourite kanji character to write! Will it be “花 (flower), 鳥 (bird), 風 (wind), or 月 (moon)”? Each has its own beauty and meaning. It’s a wonderful way to express yourself and connect with Japanese culture.
【Washi Paper Art】
For your final masterpiece, write on Sekishu washi—a luxurious handmade paper recognised as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Its soft texture and elegance make your finished work extra special, turning it into a unique piece of art you’ll be proud to take home.
【Reflection & Memories】
Wrap up the session by sharing your creations together. Celebrate your progress, ask questions, and of course, snap plenty of photos of your calligraphy. Leave with happy memories, a deeper appreciation of Japanese culture, and your very own artwork to treasure.
