Description

For a change of pace from your usual breakfast company, head to the Singapore Zoo and add a curious crew of friendly orangutans to the mix. As you fill up on tropical fruits and hearty morning fare at the lodge-style Ah Meng Restaurant, the monkeys amble over from their habitat to say hello.

Rise and shine and head on over to the Singapore Zoo's Ah Meng Restaurant, a cosy and casual lodge-style eatery that's perfectly set within the jungle-like setting of the zoo. Check out the photographs of the restaurant's namesake, Ah Meng, on your way in—this beloved orangutan called the zoo home for nearly 40 years, and even met famous visitors like Prince Philip and Michael Jackson.

Fill up your plate at the buffet, which features western dishes along with local specialities. Sit down and enjoy the fresh air and greenery, and then watch as the tree-trunk drawbridge connecting the orangutan's free-range habitat to the restaurant area is lowered and these people-loving primates wander in to make an appearance.

I wanted to cry when I saw the orangutans. (They're my favorite animal). The breakfast spread was good. I don't suggest this activity if you have a lot of small children. I wish I could have had more time up close to the orangutans. They kind of just take your picture and then move you away for the next person. However, they let you go back up for a second picture if you want one. I also wish there was an option to maybe give the orangutans a piece of fruit and to get more candid pictures of the interaction. Overall, I was happy.

Really enjoyed the experience. I really loved the fact that the staff personally seated everyone so there wasn't a rush to get to the front. The food was very nice in my opinion and to have the orangutans in full view with the photo opportunity was brilliant. The only negative was I found the photos to be a little expensive at $65 per photo but the staff were more than happy to take photos for us using our camera phone.

This was unnecessarily complicated because the local ticketing agent never told us to go to counter 2 to redeem our voucher. So we ended up showing our barcodes at the main entrance; told by a zoo staff member this only got us breakfast not entry, though it clearly said zoo, breakfast and tram on it. So we got in line (wasted 20 minutes) to pay for tickets, got to the breakfast ticket counter (30 minutes wait) only to be told that we had to redeem our voucher at window w (for tour guides). Luckily we got a refund and the tickets issued right away. But the breakfast itself was way too crowded with maybe 150 people in the same space plus a line to take photos with the animals. The zoo itself is wonderful for kids with so many things to do that it’s worth it if you’re already going. Not the intimate experience picture here in the ads.
