What you can expect

The biggest Jewish community in Eastern Europe is in Budapest. Get an look into their rich cultural, historical and religious heritage. Hungarian and Jewish culture have been intertwined for many centuries and it still is.

Budapest has the largest Jewish community in Central Europe, with an active religious, artistic and historical Jewish heritage. Through centuries the Hungarian and Jewish history has been intertwined. Hungarian Jews played and are still playing to this day an important role in the country’s economical, cultural and political life.

Tours are organised in English. We aim to keep the sightseeing tours with small groups of guests, so that you may experience the history you can see and touch at its best.

To fit your needs we prepared two types of Jewish Heritage Tours:

Jewish Heritage essential tour:

As the highlight of the tour, we visit the Dohány Street Synagogue (interior visit), which is the largest in Europe and the second largest in the world. You also get a local guided tour in the Jewish Museum, where you see the Hungarian Jewish heritage through a unique collection of art pieces from Hungary and Eastern Europe, and the rich tradition of Judaism, its holidays and everyday life. A separate room commemorates the Hungarian Holocaust. Beside these we visit the Martyrs’ Cemetery, the Raoul Wallenberg Memorial Park with the Tree of Life and the Heroes’ Temple (outside visit).

Jewish Heritage Grand tour

The first part of the Grand Tour includes the whole Essential Tour. After a short break we continue our walk through the Jewish Quarter, on the streets of the former Ghetto, where synagogues, monuments, kosher restaurants, and kosher shops can be found. While your guide tells you important facts and local stories from this area, you also get to know more about Budapest.

Main stops after Essential stops:

  • Carl Lutz Memorial Park
  • Madách Square
  • Gozsdu Passage
  • Orthodox Jewish Quarter
  • Interior visit - Kazinczy Street Synagogue
  • Cake in the glatt kosher Fröhlich confectionery or 10 percent discount in the glatt kosher Carmel restaurant
