What you can expect

Immerse yourself in the delicate art of Japanese calligraphy in a serene setting in Yokohama. Guided by an award-winning instructor with over 50 years of experience—also a Kanagawa Prefecture Certified Tourist Guide— you will learn essential techniques, from brush handling to the graceful strokes of kanji. Create a unique piece of art on a traditional fan(uchiwa) and savour the flavours of authentic Japanese tea and sweets as you unwind in this cosy, small-group class. Take home a beginner’s guide to continue your calligraphy journey.

Activity itinerary

You can take a basic, authentic calligraphy lesson at the Yokohama Port Opening Memorial Hall (Jack's Tower), one of Yokohama's traditional buildings. You will be given a model to use on the spot, where you can write your favourite characters or a single character of your name in kanji. You will then copy this into a beautiful Japanese paper fan(uchiwa) as calligraphy art, which you can take home as a souvenir. At the end of the lesson, you will enjoy Japanese tea (sencha) and Japanese sweets. You will also be able to take home a beginner's guide to calligraphy in English.
