Overview

Kadıköy doesn't perform Istanbul — it lives it. On this afternoon walk through the Asian side's most spirited neighbourhood, you'll taste your way through centuries of drinking culture: from an Ottoman confectioner founded in 1777 to a wine bar serving Anatolia's oldest grape varieties, from a century-old pastry house to a meyhane where the rakı flows as the sun drops over the Marmara Sea.

Seven stops. Seven stories.
One neighbourhood that quietly holds more of Istanbul's soul than any postcard ever could.

Activity itinerary

Kadikoy Iskelesi

  • 30m
We meet at the ferry terminal and walk into the heart of Kadıköy's market together. Our first stop is a Kadıköy institution since 1923 — a narrow, antique-filled coffee house at the entrance of the historic bazaar. Over a cup of freshly ground Turkish coffee and a single piece of lokum, we'll talk about how coffee arrived in Ottoman Istanbul, why it was briefly banned by three sultans, and what the grounds at the bottom of your cup are supposedly telling you.

Kadikoy Carsisi

  • 20m
Steps from the coffee house, we enter one of Istanbul's oldest confectionery shops — founded in 1777, supplier to the Ottoman Imperial Palace for generations. Here we taste an Ottoman sherbet: a cold, jewel-coloured syrup drink made from fruits, spices, and flowers that predates the arrival of tea and coffee in Anatolia. Each colour tells a storey; each flavour was once prescribed as medicine by palace doctors.

Kadikoy

  • 20m
A few steps further, we step back in time again — but to a different era. It has been here since 1923, founded by a Greek confectioner in the early years of the Turkish Republic. It is widely credited as the place where chocolate was first made in Turkey. We sit down properly here, over Turkish tea and a piece of it's signature dark chocolate, and talk about the neighbourhood's layered identity: the Greeks, Armenians, and Jews who shaped Kadıköy's culinary culture before and after the Republic.

Kadikoy

  • 20m
From the 19th century to the 21st: Kadıköy's craft beer movement arrived quietly and is now one of the most vibrant in the city. At here, we try a glass from one of Turkey's independent craft breweries — and talk about why beer has always had a complicated relationship with Ottoman and Turkish identity, from the Pera taverns of the 19th century to today's microbreweries.

Moda Park

  • 30m
Tucked into a side street in Moda, it is quietly one of Istanbul's most important wine destinations. Every bottle on their list is Turkish — sourced from over 70 producers across Anatolia. Using a Coravin system, they serve rare bottles by the glass that you'd otherwise never taste. We'll try one or two pours chosen by the team, and talk about Anatolia's 8,000-year-old winemaking history — and why Öküzgözü and Boğazkere are names worth remembering.

Moda Park

  • 20m
Between the wine bar and the meyhane, we slow down. Sofa's garden is one of Kadıköy's most quietly beautiful spots — a courtyard hidden from the street, with the sound of a fountain and no particular hurry. We'll have a glass of pistachio lemonade here, a recipe inspired by Alanya on Turkey's southern coast. This is not a tasting stop. It's a pause — the kind that makes the last stop taste better.

Fenerbahce

  • 30m
We walk to the waterfront. Meyhane sits on the Kalamış shore, facing across the Marmara Sea towards the Prince's Islands. We arrive in time for the light to change. Rakı comes to the table — cloudy white in the glass, aniseed on the nose, ice on the side — along with a selection of cold meze: white cheese, melon in season, haydari. This is the ritual that Turks call 'the longest table': not about drinking, but about staying. We'll stay long enough to watch the sun drop behind the minarets of the Asian shore.
