On this eventful morning, we explore the best-preserved volcano on the island of Ischia. From the Castiglione Thermal Park in Casamicciola, we hike along the flank of the Rotaro volcano through the green, fragrant pine groves of the “Bosco Della Maddalena”. Along the way, we immerse ourselves in the volcano's 1,000-year history by taking a closer look at the rocks along the path. They tell us about the volcano's active period. Passing a parasitic crater and a volcanic dome, we head towards the volcanic crater. On the way, we come across a fumarole field. Feel for yourself the warm gases that rise incessantly from the earth's interior. On a walking tour of the volcanic crater, we finally take a look at its mighty, stony, and also very green interior. The tour ends at a typical Ischian estate near Fiaiano.

GEOLOGIST'S TIP: The fumaroles of the Rotaro are not to be missed. These are points where gases escape in volcanically active areas. On Ischia, they mainly consist of water vapour and a little CO2. Put your hand into the holes in the ground and feel the rising heat and the different temperatures they can reach!
