Once you reach the top of the town, you can visit the Palazzo d'Avalos, which later became the Royal Palace, then was transformed into a prison in 1830, and finally closed in 1988. Another splendid attraction is the Abbey of Saint Michele (the patron saint of the island), where numerous works are preserved, including the painting depicting Saint Michele defeating Satan. On the western side of the island is the islet of Vivara, connected to the main island by a long pedestrian bridge. Vivara is an uninhabited area, but it is actually a volcanic crater that is now submerged.
