Formerly located on the outskirts of the city, the Sternschanze is now a culturally vibrant and trendy area in Hamburg. Here, artists work alongside hipsters, the left-wing scene has its home with the “Rote Flora,” and newcomers live next to long-established Hamburgers. Your tour guide will take you on a culinary tour through cafes and restaurants of various cultures that still shape this colourful district to this day. Recognised as a separate district since 2008, this district looks back on an eventful history that begins in the 17th century with a former defensive structure. It is shaped by the influx of different cultures.

The Portuguese immigrants of the 1970s were followed by other immigrants who built new lives here and also left their mark on the Schanze in culinary terms: it is not without reason that the high street is called the “Galao-Strich” (shoulder blade).
