Visit the pulse of Lusaka! New Soweto Market is the vibrant city market in city centre Lusaka. Your guide will meet you at Lusaka National Museum, on Independence Avenue. You will go together in a taxi for a guided market tour, focused on food, followed by a traditional Zambian lunch at a matebeto restaurant. You will learn about the diversity of Zambian foods, which are trucked in from all corners of Zambia and from neighbouring countries. You'll be surprised to learn how many foods are only prepared and eaten at homes and never found on restaurant menus. You'll also see how seasonal foods are preserved for sale throughout the year. Jiranileo has trained local youth as our guides, promoting new income streams for youth in Zambia's tourism sector.
Stop 1: Upon arrival at the market, you will take a guided tour of approximately 1 hour through the busy market, stopping at 8-10 places to learn about foods for sale.
Stop 2: From the market, your guide will take you for lunch, travelling from the market in a taxi to Thornpark area. Before eating, you will take a short guided tour of Thornpark area, learning about the residents and the history.
Stop 3: You'll meet several food vendors in the “matebeto” street food area. You will eat a traditional Zambian meal of nshima plus 7+ sides with bottled water and a non-alcoholic drink. (Vegetarian meal option is available. Please let us know at booking.)
Stop 4: You'll continue your Thornpark area tour after eating and see the oldest tree in Lusaka. This activity ends in Thornpark area near Walmulwa Road.
